What's the oem size of the front brakes. Be prepaided to drop a few hundred atleast with anything that has to do with upgrading brakes.

the scion....

xa?
xb?
xb2?
tc?
xd?

and im guessing just rears right?
What i will tell you is that Pick-your-Part is gonna be your best friend....cost and part availability wise.
You can make it happen its just going to take a lot of custom fabrication.

Get the rears from some old celica, build custom brackets for the calipers and arms, and it should work.....it wont be a "weekend meet and work on cars"kinda thing. Be ready to spend alot of time making this work

In the long run it'll be cheaper becuase changing a drum is vella expensive but the likelyhood of that happening is slim.

forever and a half....
if you think about it....you rarely use your rear brakes to do actual braking....especially on our small cars. Rear brakes are primarily used for emergency breaking or for a parking brake.
